Website Twitter Feed stuck on Loading…

Feb 3, 2013

We had an issue on our own website (built in WordPress) when mysteriously our Twitter Feed stopped working and remained stuck on ‘Loading…’ A very frustrating thing to deal with but when approached logically our web partner assessed the site first asking –

  • Has anything else been changed or updated on the back end? (code side of the site). Answer, no.
  • Is the widget (the part that controls where the twitter feeds show on our site) still set up correctly? Answer, yes.

At this point check / confirm you have not changed your Twitter account name. These two questions will eliminate the possibility that the problem is being caused by your own site and the solution lays with Twitter, hence our publishing of this post.

After hours of knowledgeable searching of Twitter technical forums we found the following (To confirm this is written for WordPress developed sites).

Twitter officially changed it’s api address a couple of months ago thus old address doesn’t work any more, to fix this issue, open ../active theme name/includes/widgets.php,

Find this existing code:

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/<?php echo $instance['username']; ?>.json?callback=twitterCallback2&amp;count=<?php echo $instance['number']; ?>"></script>

And replace with this code:

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/user_timeline/<?php echo $instance['username']; ?>.json?callback=twitterCallback2&amp;count=<?php echo $instance['number']; ?>"></script>

If you are not comfortable updating the raw code of your site yourself ask your webdeveloper or contact Social Progress, where we would be happy to look into it for you.
