Have you started getting notifications that you’re tagged in a post in a Facebook Group, or on a Facebook Page you follow? We ALL have! If you hadn’t realised yet, being able to tag “@Everyone” or “@Followers” is a new feature introduced to Groups and Pages recently, which pushes out a notification to every single one of your followers or group members (yep, you read that correctly: every. single. one.)
How the “@Everyone” tag works on Facebook:
If you haven’t tried it yet, here’s how it works:
- Start a new post or comment
- Type @Everyone or @Followers
- Publish the post or comment
- All your followers or group members receive a notification from you!
It’s an amazing feature if you’re an admin on a group or if you manage a Facebook page and you just need to get information OUT THERE, but here at Social Progress we still can’t decide if we like it or not, so here are the pros and cons for using this feature as a business:
The Pros:
Get the attention of all of your followers when you have something important to say or share. For example, if you have a staff position to fill, if you’re moving premises, or if you have a big announcement that’s time sensitive. You might also use it to draw attention to limited time offers and deals, meaning that using this feature can help you maximise the success of a product sale or service.
The Cons:
Use it too often and for things that aren’t important, and you risk annoying (and potentially losing) many of your loyal followers. Be thoughtful about when and how you use this tool to promote your products and services – we all hate too many notifications, so if you’re using this feature every time you post then you’re going to start annoying a lot of people!
In addition to this, your most loyal customers might think they are no longer treated as individuals and move elsewhere, to a company or organisation where they feel more valued. Just another thing to consider before you go tag-happy!
How to disable the “@Everyone” tag on Facebook:
As a Facebook user, if this feature is already annoying you then look no further, because we have the step-by-step instructions below for the easy way to disable being tagged in an “@everyone” comment from here on out! All you have to do is:
- Go to the Menu and click the Settings icon.
- Click Profile Settings.
- Click Notification Settings
- Scroll down and click “Tags”
- Toggle off the “Batch @Everyone mentions”
What are your thoughts on the new Facebook feature? We would love to hear whether you think the pros outweigh the cons!
