January Social Media Round-Up

Feb 4, 2022

Wow – how January has flown! We hope you’ve all had a happy and healthy start to 2022 and that you have lots of great thing in store for the year ahead.

In December, we put together a round-up of changes, updates and things we’ve noticed in the world of social media in 2021.

Already, we’ve seen a few sneaky social media updates in 2022 and we thought we’d keep you in the loop with anything we spot, so nothing is catching you out or leaving you behind the times.

INTRODUCING TWITTER SPACES

If you’re a regular tweeter, you may have noticed the latest Twitter craze – Twitter Spaces. Spaces is still in development by Twitter but has already seen a rise in interest and popularity.

Twitter spaces are basically audio rooms that one host can set up, and anyone can join (even if they’re not following you). Once the Space has started, the host can invite listeners in as co-hosts or speakers. So in simple terms, it’s a Zoom call without cameras, that anyone can join.

So far, we’re not sure what to think about this new Twitter feature! The main flaw we’ve noticed is that there doesn’t seem to be an option to search for spaces by topic, so you’re not always sure what it is you’re joining! If this does become a feature, it could end up being a great tool to join in the discussion on relevant topics that you have an interest in.

WHAT’S THAT WORDLE?

It’s understandable if Twitter spaces have passed you by, but we’d be REALLY surprised if you’d missed this new craze!

Wordle is a new online game that has taken the world by storm. Though the game was created in November, its popularity really hit in January with a massive increase to over 2 million players worldwide.

With just one word puzzle a day to solve, Wordle is keeping people social and connected by sharing their results and challenging their friends.

So, how’s this relevant to social media? Well, you may have seen your Facebook and Twitter feeds starting to fill up with rows of black, green and yellow squares. This was sparked by one user sharing their results in this format, prompting Wardle, the game’s creator to add this as a feature to the game.

IN-FEED FACEBOOK STORIES

Facebook seems to be the most constantly-developing platform and almost every day in the SoPro office one of us is gathering the rest of the team saying ‘Have you seen this?’ or ‘Oh this is new!’

This month, we saw a change to the way stories are displayed on Facebook. Now, as well as seeing them in circles along the top of your feed, they also appear like regular posts in your newsfeed.

This means that your stories are now likely to reach far more people, as viewers will no longer have to manually click on your icon to view your stories but can come across them while scrolling down their feed.

BUSINESS PAGE INBOX IN FACEBOOK MESSENGER

If you manage one or more business pages on Facebook, we’re sure you’ll be thrilled to hear this news – your page’s messages are now available in Messenger!

Previously, it could be quite the struggle to access messages sent to your Facebook page from your mobile, and required a separate Business Suite app. Whereas most Facebook users already have Messenger on their phone for personal use and find it a simple and easy-to-use messaging app.

This update should make it much easier to access all your Facebook messages in one place and quickly toggle between your personal messages, and your page’s messages.

THAT’S ALL FOR THIS MONTH!

We hope you enjoyed this month’s round-up and we can’t wait to see what February has in store! Be sure to keep an eye out for next month’s update to see what’s changed!

Is there something we’ve missed? We’d love to hear any other changes you’ve spotted in the last month, so be sure to share them with us on social media.
