Guest Post: Fairandfunky and Fairtrade Fortnight

Feb 3, 2015

We’d like to introduce fairandfunky who have written this guest blog about their involvement in Fairtrade Fortnight and their activities within the community! “When is this Fairtrade Fortnight?” we hear you ask! Well, it’s from Monday 23rd February until Sunday 8th March 2015! So we encourage you to get involved and support Fairtrade..! That’s enough waffle from us, here’s what the lovely Helen (from fairandfunky) has to say:

Sophie & Helen of Fairandfunky

This Fairtrade Fortnight fairandfunky host the first Fairtrade Conference for Schools in Kirklees, and we’re delighted that Social Progress is one of our six ‘Conference Champion’ sponsors! Social Progress have done a lot of tweeting, and Facebooking and shouting about their involvement and asked us, fairandfunky, to share a bit more about who we are and what we do….

Based in Holmfirth, fairandfunky deliver creative and interactive workshops on Fairtrade, recycling and the environment to schools and community groups across Yorkshire (and further afield!). Our mission statement is ‘empowering people to take their own little steps to change the world’. Each of our workshops encourage participants to look at the world around them and empower people of all ages with the knowledge that their actions can have a positive impact on the world around them; both locally and globally.

Fairandfunky Kids 1From learning about the importance of recycling in ‘Change The World With An Eggbox’ to discovering all about the supply chain of cocoa in ‘Chocolate and Fairtrade’ each workshop challenges participants to think about the world around them: What do you do with your rubbish? Where does your food comes from?  Many of our workshops also encourage creativity; in our SCRAPtastic workshops  participants only use recycled materials to make individual pieces of artwork. And we like to be challenged ourselves! And together with schools we have made a Fairtrade Orchard, bikes from yoghurt pots and a GIANT Fairtrade farmer. What will you challenge fairandfunky with?

Fairtrade Fortnight begins next month and is one of our busiest times. This year as well as workshops, Fairtrade Fairs, and presentation events, we are hosting the ‘fairandfunky Fairtrade Conference for Schools’.  The conference brings together Primary Schools from across Kirklees to celebrate and learn about Fairtrade through creative arts and education workshops for students and teachers. This is the first conference in Kirklees to combine Fairtrade and the arts, offering professional development for teachers and innovative learning for students. We are really excited about the event and plan to make it a regular fairandfunky Fairtrade Fortnight feature.
